The composition of your image has a huge impact on how interesting your photo is.  There are many rules for composition, this video goes over some simple ones that will give you the most bang for your buck as a beginner.


Here are some still images that illustrate a few composition rules.

Check your backgrounds

Rule of thirds: place subjects where the lines intersect for biggest impact

Rule of Thirds: place horizon lines and key features on the third lines

Only place subjects dead center when there is interesting symmetry

Fill the frame with your subjects when you can for more intimate shots

Have motion lead into the frame instead of out of the frame
